One dead, six wounded in Sudan protest: medics

"The injured person was brought to hospital but he died from wounds," a doctor said on condition of anonymity, without specifying the nature of injuries.

Another doctor said that six other protesters were being treated at Omdurman's main hospital.

"I myself gave medicines to six people wounded by bullets," he said.

The protest by hundreds at Omdurman, on the west bank of the Nile, came soon after thousands gathered at a rally in Khartoum backing President Omar al-Bashir.

Protesters in Omdurman were confronted with tear gas, while a group of doctors later said that police had also fired tear gas at Omdurman's main hospital.

Angry demonstrators have taken to the streets since last month after a government decision to triple the price of bread at a time when the country faces an acute shortage of foreign currency and 70 percent inflation.

Authorities have so far confirmed at least 19 deaths including two security personnel during the demonstrations that erupted on December 19, but Human Rights Watch has put the death toll at 40, including children.
