Omah Lay crowns himself Nigeria’s best artist of the last 20 years, says only Burna Boy comes close
Afrobeats superstar Omah Lay is in an upbeat mood ahead of the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album 'Clarity of Mind'. In a new interview with Nandoleaks, the musician boasted that he has been the best Nigerian musician of the last 20 years in a chest-thumping moment that shows the belief and confidence he has in his talent.
"I don't want to brag too much, but I am the best at this. When you put the whole Afrobeats artist category...When it comes to art, like making music, I am the best of the last 20 years, maybe the only person that sometimes I put myself with his Burna Boy," he boasted. Omah Lay added that the only person he considers to be a worthy contemporary is his fellow Port Harcourt-born superstar Burna Boy.
Omah Lay's comments on his status are easily reconcilable with his upbeat personality, which led him to make similar defiant declarations in the past. In 2025, he shared on his X page that he's the greatest of his generation and his upcoming album will be the proof.
In his interview with Nandoleaks, Omah Lay restated that his upcoming sophomore album is the greatest Afrobeats album of all time.
The journey to the release of his upcoming LP has been an eventful one, which has birthed several newsmaking moments. In 2024, Omay Lay made headlines after he claimed that he had to scrap the album and start afresh after a top artist he loved and respected ran away with a sound he shared with him.
The musician would eventually kick off the season of his upcoming album with the release of the hit single 'Holyghost' in 2024. He followed this up with 'Waist' in 2025, and recently with 'Don't Love Me'. All three tracks will appear on the 12-track 'Clarity of Mind,' which is set for release on April 3, 2026.
Speaking on the upcoming album, Omah Lay shared that as the title suggests, the project is just an honest take on different aspects of his life, including his mental health and sex life, which he reveals is out of control.
Similar to his commercially successful and critically-acclaimed debut album 'Boy Alone,' fans can expect introspection and vulnerability in 'Clarity of Mind,' which the singer boasts is the greatest album in the history of contemporary Nigerian pop music.
