SWAN says journalist's death is a painful and irreplaceable loss

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Lagos Chapter, has described the death of its colleague, as 'a painful and irreplaceable loss' to the association.

Okugbe, who died on October 9, 2015 in Lagos was a reporter/producer, who worked with the Daar Communications, owners of the African Indepentent Television (AIT) and Ray Power Radio.

He was also until his death, the President of the Archery Federation of Nigeria.

A statement signed by Lagos SWAN Chairman, Fred Edoreh said the association lamented that it watched helplessly as Okugbe’s condition deteriorated into defying various medical solution.

"We are pained. We feel a deep sense of loss but we give God the glory that Okugbe distinguished himself, nationally and internationally as a hardworking and excellent sports journalist.

"Okugbe, while alive approached his job with a deep passion for sports promotion, development and commitment. Death cannot take away that honour from him.

"We commend the Chief Medical Officer and the entire management of LASUTH for their support and commitment in providing a bed space for in the hope of saving him from the sickness."

The association also expressed its gratitude to the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Ayo Agbesanwa and Frank Ilaboya, Chairman of the Edo State Football Association for rallying support in last ditch effort to help to save Okugbe.
