Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owners of Liverpool FC, confirmed on Friday the sale of a minority stake in the Premier League club to a consortium that includes American billionaire and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos. This agreement follows negotiations first reported in July.
While the exact size of the stake has not been disclosed, English media reports suggest it will be between 30% and one-third of the club's capital. Bezos's entry into Liverpool marks his first foray into the world of sports, after years of speculation about his potential investment in various American sports franchises.
The consortium, named 1892 Holdings, is led by Amit Bhatia, former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers. Joining him are the K5 Sports fund, through which Bezos participates, and the wealth management office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife, Elaine. With this new structure, Bhatia will assume the role of Vice-Chairman of the club, while Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports will join the board of directors. The same source confirms that Jeff Bezos will not hold a board seat.
This marks the second external minority investment in the club since Dynasty Equity acquired a 3% stake for approximately 200 million euros in September 2023. FSG assured in a statement that it will maintain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool, with no changes planned for the club's leadership or day-to-day management.
Mike Gordon, FSG President, commented on the partnership: "Liverpool has always been built with a vision beyond a single season and with decisions made with the long-term interests of the club in mind. This approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders worldwide." Gordon added that "it became clear that Amit and the consortium share our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special."
In turn, Amit Bhatia, on behalf of 1892 Holdings, expressed his pride in the deal. "We are incredibly proud to invest in Liverpool Football Club and to do so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for all they have achieved at Anfield," he stated. "To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege. We are making this investment because we deeply believe in Liverpool and its leadership," he concluded.
