Portugal defender Nuno Mendes acknowledges the tough challenge awaiting his team in the World Cup Round of 16, where they are set to face Spain in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
“If we can replicate the Nations League final result, that would be fantastic. But this is a different match and a different tournament. We will approach Spain the same way we approach every game in this competition,” Mendes stated. The Portuguese defeated Spain in the Nations League final after a penalty shootout, with the match ending 2-2 in regular time.
“We know we can play a bit better than what we’ve shown so far. We have the capability to do it. We understand that the loser goes home. On paper, Spain is the strongest opponent we will face in the tournament. But once the match starts, it could be tough or it could be easier,” he added.
