In a turbulent season for Australia's national rugby league competition, NSW police confirmed on Thursday that matches are being investigated.

In a statement received by Omnisport, a police spokesperson said: "The Organised Crime Squad is in the early stages of examining information to alleged match fixing in the NRL.

"No further comment is appropriate at this stage."

The match-fixing probe comes after Parramatta Eels were fined and sanctioned last month for breaching the salary cap.

It is also not the first time the NRL has been embroiled in a match-fixing scandal, after the late Ryan Tandy was found guilty in 2011 of a plan to manipulate the first score of a game in August 2010 between Canterbury Bulldogs and North Queensland Cowboys.
