Newcastle Knights have re-signed utility-back Peter Mata'utia from NRL rivals St George Illawarra Dragons.

Mata'utia left the Knights to join the Dragons two years ago, but the 25-year-old has returned to Hunter Stadium to be reunited with his brothers Chanel, Pat and Sione for the rest of this season and the 2017 campaign.

"Peter is a local junior who we are bringing home, and that is important," said Knights coach Nathan Brown.

"More importantly he is a left centre, which is something we have been looking for.

"Peter is a good, consistent first grade player and he will help enhance our young developing players."
