Today, April 8, 2016, Nomoreloss was laid to rest. The tears flowed, the people wailed, the sun was scorching, and there was an air of sadness and realism that hung heavily and weighed on the minds of people who gathered at the popular Ikoyi Cemetery, Lagos. The singer, who is remembered by the public for just a minute part of his life work, and by the industry players, for his great input into their lives as a friend, colleague, brother and hustler has been laid to rest.
“While we were hustling, while we where doing Nomoreloss Live, I didn't see this many cameras here but I thank you all for today. Ese gan. Ile ise yin o ni jo na. (Thank you very much. Your lifework will not be destroyed).”Ruggedman sadly addressed the multitude of news men who showed up to get a good scoop and commoditize the funeral for clicks, views and reads.
Ruggedman’s words ring through, and expose a certain flawed and uncomfortable reality of life and the passing of musicians.
Often, in the case an of unfortunate passing of a musician, we like to think how it sucks that people that we look up to, and share in their successes have been unfairly taken away from us. We also do forget the overwhelming circumstances these celebrities are in that drive them to these untimely deaths. It’s easy to see the situation of Nomoreloss as being exceptional now that he is dead, than to consider that we all failed to pay attention to his output and concerts all through these years. Although his output was not next to nothing, (he had albums in 2006, 2014, 2015), we failed to properly pay him any attention. This will happen again, and again. But a pop star like Davido, who has been touring all year, and helped himself with a chart-topping single, will get all the attention. When he isn’t popping again, he will be abandoned until his death.
Nomoreloss is dead and buried, and everybody moves on. Life in itself is very fickle, and every day, thousands of people follow that route. Many people will forget, and his memory will fade. Certain celebrities have faded, alive and well, but with their images fading with them. That’s normal. It goes without saying that dying young sucks, regardless what the cause is, but in some cases, certain musicians had their reputations preserved because of their sudden exits. Dagrin is one of the highlighted members of the Industry that will hardly be forgotten because of his fast-paced lifestyle that ultimately contributed to his free-form music and saddening death.
But will you ever forget Nomoreloss? Will you ever remember a time that you didn’t care about him because he was irrelevant? No. The idea that “he could’ve kept making more” often transcends the idea that “he could’ve fallen so easily.” That’s the kind of optimism that’s fine by most people who would not allow guilt to depress them. With how rare real consistent longevity is in music, sometimes it’s best just to accept and appreciate what fans have had and dream of the more that could have become. As far as some of our idols that have passed on too soon, there’s only so much mourning you could do. After all, it did leave them, somewhat youthful and ambitious, immortalized in our minds. Burning out, rather than fading away. It’s just a compromise we’ll have to deal with. But this does not apply for Nomoreloss. He faded before our eyes, and the industry left him and his sound.
That’s the reality of his death and burial. That’s what we will remember, although we will fail to admit it, even to ourselves.
