The historical novelist was described by the The Nobel Academy as "a Marcel Proust of our time", BBC reports.
The French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls also said that Modiano, whose work has often focused on the Nazi occupation of France, is "undoubtedly one of the greatest writers" of recent years.
The award, which will be presented to the 69-year-old author, is worth eight million kronor (£691,000) (N184,028,486.11).
Previous winners of the award include Nigeria’s Wole Soyinka, who was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first African to be so honoured, and literary giant, Ernest Hemingway.
