Nigerian passport renewal: NIS sends mobile team to UK to help Nigerians with expiring passports and application delays

• Nigerians in the UK can renew their passports even if less than 1 year remains.

• NIS will take passport services to designated UK cities.

• Applicants must wait for the official schedule before travelling.

Nigerians living in the United Kingdom whose passports have less than one year left before expiry will have access to a special passport intervention exercise being organised by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The intervention makes passport services easier for Nigerians in the UK, especially those dealing with pending applications or needing to renew an expiring passport.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, to deploy a dedicated Passport Intervention Team from NIS headquarters in Abuja to the UK.

The team is scheduled to arrive on August 10, 2026, and will work with the Nigerian High Commission to process and issue pending, new and renewal passport applications.

According to an official statement posted on the NIS's X page, the team will also visit designated cities across the United Kingdom to conduct passport enrolment and processing.

This means Nigerians living outside London may not have to travel to the capital, depending on which cities are eventually included in the intervention.

The exercise is open to:

• Nigerians with pending passport applications.

• People applying for a new Nigerian passport.

• Nigerians whose passports have less than one year before expiry and want to renew them.

Applicants attending the enrolment are required to present their completed application forms and proof of payment.

For standard passport re-issues through the Nigerian High Commission in London, applicants are also required to provide documents including their original Nigerian passport, NIN details and appointment documentation.

If your Nigerian passport has less than one year remaining before its expiry date, it is advisable to start the renewal process early, particularly if you have international travel planned.

Waiting until the passport is almost expired could leave you with less time to deal with delays or documentation issues.

The intervention also gives applicants with existing pending applications another opportunity to seek assistance with their cases.

NIS says its digital passport application channels will remain operational throughout the intervention.

The Service's Contactless Passport Application System is also available to eligible Nigerians in the diaspora.

NIS said the system had processed and issued more than 15,000 passports to Nigerians abroad as of September 2025.

The Nigeria Immigration Service also says its passport services allow Nigerians to apply for or renew passports online, while applicants complete the required biometric process. 

NIS says home delivery will also remain available during the intervention.

The special intervention does not announce a new passport fee.

NIS previously stated that passport fees for Nigerians applying from outside Nigeria remained at $150 for a 32-page passport with five-year validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity.

Those fees were unchanged by the September 2025 domestic fee increase. 

Applicants should use the official payment instructions for their application and avoid paying unofficial agents.

Applicants should also monitor the official channels of the Nigeria High Commission in the UK for the intervention schedule.

For now, if your Nigerian passport has less than one year left, you may be eligible for the special UK passport exercise, but wait for the official city and venue schedule before travelling.
