A trip to Lesotho was next in their quest to reach AFCON 2021 with the Super Eagles riding high with confidence. But they would soon be rocked as the home side took the lead in the 11th minute. 

With everything that has excited about this Super Eagles, they are still conceding goals at a worrying rate. It tells much about how they switch off in moments. Against Benin and Lesotho, the goals conceded didn’t matter much but against better opposition, it could be costly. 

It was Semi Ajayi who switched off and allowed Nkoto Masoabi to get his head on a cross. Daniel Akpeyi was stranded and Nigeria were behind. 

The Super Eagles did bounce back and took control of the game but Lesotho threatened on the counter. 

William Troost-Ekong threatened with a freekick from long distance before the equaliser came in the 26th minute thanks to the good work by Victor Osimhen. The Lille striker robbed the ball of a Lesotho defender and found Alex Iwobi in the box. Iwobi shot the ball one time and his low effort beat the goalkeeper at the bottom corner. 

It was all Nigeria at this point and in the 30th minute, Moses Simon troubled the Lesotho goalkeeper with an effort from outside the area. In the 36th minute, Super Eagles took the lead after another good work by Osimhen. The Super Eagles No 9 received the ball outside the area and played a pass over the Lesotho defence for Samuel Chukwueze leaving the forward with little to do with just a looping header.

The goal was inevitable as the Super Eagles showed their superiority. After creating two goals, Osimhen had a chance to score his own but he toe-effort inside the box went wide. He attempted another shot from the box which went well cover the bar. 

It continued like this in the second half but the Super Eagles had to survive a scare in the 69th minute when Chidozie Awaziem seemed to have fouled a Lesotho player as the last man. A freekick would have meant a sending off for Awaziem but the referee waved play on. 

In the 75th minute, Osimhen got a deserved goal after he got on a cross from Ola Aina before completing his brace eight minutes later. The move started with substitute Azeez Ramon who found the Osimhen in the box and the striker beat a sprawling Lesotho goalkeeper with a touch to score his second of the game. 

With the Super Eagles cruising, Lesotho got another consolation in the 89th minute through an own-goal from Awaziem who turned a cross into his own net. 

4-2 it ended to give Nigeria the three points and put them in control of Group L of the AFCON 2021 qualifiers above the Benin Republic, Lesotho and Sierra Leone.
