Newcastle United has announced the signing of 18-year-old Dutch midfielder Sean Stuur, who arrives at St. James' Park from Ajax in a deal worth £23 million. He has penned a five-year contract with the Magpies.
In the latter half of last season, Stuur established himself as a first-team regular for Ajax, making his derby debut against Feyenoord at just 17 years old.
Stuur is Newcastle's third summer acquisition, following Bazoumana Touré, who joined from Hoffenheim for £42 million, and goalkeeper Even Jaouen, a £18 million signing. This reinforces the club's apparent shift in strategy, focusing primarily on bringing in promising young talents aged 20 or under.
Meanwhile, Newcastle has already offloaded two of its biggest stars, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, for a combined £169 million. Yesterday, reports also emerged that Bruno Guimarães has requested a transfer to Arsenal.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here. This is a giant club in the Premier League, and I’ve always dreamed of playing in the best league in the world.
I was at home at Ajax. I joined when I was seven years old, and I’m leaving with only good memories. But when a club like Newcastle comes calling, it’s really hard to say no,” Stuur stated.
"We see real potential in Sean and believe he possesses the qualities to become a valuable player for us in the coming years. Sean is an exciting addition to our squad. He has received an excellent foundation at Ajax – a club with an outstanding track record of developing young players," added Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
