Matthias Jaissle's side was eager to bounce back after their 4-1 defeat to Leeds. They started at a blistering pace, quickly netting two goals. Willock opened the scoring after an assist from Harvey Barnes, and Hall doubled the lead with a low, diagonal strike. Newcastle could have extended their lead further, but Wissa failed to convert a penalty kick.

The second half saw a different dynamic. Hull gained the upper hand, and after Cho's goal, they put significant pressure on their opponents. Hornicek made a brilliant save from a long-range shot by Bellumi, and substitute Iroegbunam fired over the bar from an excellent position. The Magpies held on to their lead, drawing level on points with their opponents, for whom this was their first league defeat of the season.
