Dino Toppmöller, the new German coach for French vice-champions Lens, has named Florian Thauvin as the team's starting captain for the 2026/27 season. This decision comes after Adrien Thomasson's transfer to Rennes. The forward's appointment as the new captain was confirmed two days before the Champions Trophy match against Paris Saint-Germain, set to be played at the Stade Bollaert in Nantes.
"I am proud of the honor to be the guarantor of this team, to be captain. It's not additional pressure; it's a logical progression for me. I am very happy, but there will be no change in my behavior," the 33-year-old Thauvin, a 2018 World Cup winner with France, told L'Equipe newspaper.
The 35-year-old Florian Sotoca will also serve as a captain for Lens, though he has been seeing progressively less playing time.
