Anti-piracy commission saved government, copyright owners over N1.5 billion in 2015

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in a recent report has revealed that it saved the government and copyright owners from losing over N1.5 billion in 2015 to pirates.

The anti-piracy commission said that it seized a total of 1,783,914 copyright works across the country, ranging from DVDs, books, MP3s and software and the estimated market worth for the seized confiscated items was N1,649,343,460.
In October 2015, the commission’s anti-piracy operation which led to the arrest of 98 suspected pirates and the public burning of about 10.5 million pirated works seized from Kaduna and Kano states.

The commission credited its 2015 achievement to rigorous training of its in-house staff to boost intelligence gathering, positive attitudes and investigative skills.
NCC further stated that poor financing, corruption and culture are the major challenges the commission has faced till date.
