The Milwaukee Bucks have sent their biggest star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, along with Bobby Portis, to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster trade that has sent shockwaves through the NBA. In return, the Bucks acquire Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and a significant haul of draft picks, according to ESPN.

The package heading to Milwaukee includes three first-round draft picks—this Tuesday's 13th overall selection, and the Heat's unprotected 2031 and 2033 picks—a potential pick swap between the Bucks and Heat in 2030 (Milwaukee will receive the more favorable pick), and a 2033 second-round pick.

The trade, finalized Monday night between General Managers Jon Horst (Bucks) and Andy Elisburg (Heat), will become official on July 6 for salary cap reasons. While currently a direct two-team deal, the agreement remains open to potential expansion to include other teams, similar to past high-profile trades. Herro, despite being a Milwaukee native, has only one year left on his contract, and the Bucks may look to move him to another team.

With this acquisition, Heat President Pat Riley adds another monumental signing to Miami's storied franchise, placing Antetokounmpo among an elite list that includes LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Bosh, Alonzo Mourning, and Jimmy Butler. The two-time NBA MVP and 2021 Finals MVP will now team up with Bam Adebayo, aiming to lead the squad in their pursuit of the Eastern Conference title.

The Boston Celtics were reportedly the other finalist in the race for Antetokounmpo, having presented an aggressive offer that included Jaylen Brown, the 2024 Finals MVP, and two first-round picks. However, the Bucks opted for the Heat's proposal, prioritizing a long-term approach with greater flexibility, controlled contracts, and young talent for new head coach Taylor Jenkins.

For Milwaukee, beyond the future draft picks, the deal centers on young prospects Kel'el Ware (22) and Kasparas Jakucionis (20), who were selected by the Heat in the 2024 and 2025 first rounds, respectively.

Antetokounmpo's own wishes were a decisive factor in the trade. With only one guaranteed year remaining on his contract before a player option in 2027, his ability to influence his destination was considerable, as any interested team required assurance of a long-term commitment. Starting January 6, the Greek star will be eligible to sign a contract extension potentially worth up to 240 million euros over four years.

Giannis Antetokounmpo departs the Bucks after 13 seasons, during which he transformed into one of the league's most dominant figures. He was a 10-time All-Star, a two-time MVP, and the Defensive Player of the Year in 2020. The pinnacle of his Milwaukee career was leading the team to the 2021 NBA championship, their first in 50 years, where he was named Finals MVP.

With Giannis's departure and Portis included in the deal, and Thanasis Antetokounmpo now a free agent, not a single player from the 2021 championship-winning team remains in Milwaukee.
