Nasarawa Amazons beat Rivers Angels on penalties to win 2019 Women’s AITEO Cup title
Nasarawa Amazons are now the champions of the Women’s AITEO Cup after beating Rivers Angels on penalties in the final played on Sunday, July 18 at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
Rivers Angels had won three straight Women’s AITEO Cup titles before Sunday’s final which was their fourth consecutive finals but their opponents from Lafia were not about to let them stretch their winning run in the competition.
Although Nasarawa Queens were the better team, the game failed to deliver any moment of note in the whole 90 minutes.
After a scoreless 90 minutes of football, there was no need for another 30 minutes of extra-time as the competition rules stipulate.
The final went straight to penalties. Ifeoma Paulinus of Rivers Angels scored with the first effort so did Amarachi Okoronkwo of Nasarawa Amazons.
Rivers Angels captain Ojini Amaechi and Vivian Ikechukwu scored but Nasarawa Amazons goalkeeper Uchenna Chindedu saved from Chinwendu Orji before Mary Saiki scored the winner for the girls from Lafia to take home the title.
