Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, has advanced to the round of 16 of Roland Garros for the first time in her career, in a match that was about much more than just a fashion statement.
In her 100th Grand Slam match, the Japanese tennis star overcame her 18-year-old American opponent, Iva Jovic, in a nearly three-hour battle that concluded with scores of 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), and 6-4.
Osaka once again turned heads with her attire, entering the Suzanne-Lenglen court in a metallic gold bomber jacket over her sequined gold dress. This time, the ensemble was complemented by a golden-brown train that trailed across the clay court.
In her first match, Osaka wore a ceremonial black skirt and a beaded bodice before revealing the gold dress, which she said reminded her of the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night. For her second match, she opted for a bomber jacket with an ivory-colored train. "It's a surprise every time," the 28-year-old tennis player revealed about her fashion choices.
Saturday's match took place under intense, humid heat, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius, marking the seventh consecutive day of such conditions at the tournament. Midway through the match, a spectator fell ill and had to be removed from the stadium on a stretcher. Forecasts indicate a drop in temperature starting Sunday.
In the round of 16, Osaka will face the winner of the match between world number one Aryna Sabalenka and Daria Kasatkina. In the same half of the draw, defending champion Coco Gauff was set to play against 28th seed Anastasia Potapova.
In other women's singles results, Russia's Diana Shnaider defeated Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova 7-5, 6-1, in a match marred by Oliynykova's accusations that her opponent was a propagandist for the war between their countries.
In the men's draw, Felix Auger-Aliassime, the highest-ranked seed (No. 4) in the top half of the draw following Jannik Sinner's surprising elimination, is set to face American Brandon Nakashima. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Frenchman Moise Kouame will play against Alejandro Tabilo, aiming to become the youngest man to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros since Bjorn Borg in 1973.
Flavio Cobolli defeated Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, and his next opponent will be Zachary Svajda, who eliminated Francisco Cerundolo in a five-set marathon with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, and 6-3.
