Chocolate City and Milli have parted ways, and that feels like another blow on the part of the label. Milli, a swag kid, with a rap skill that has been likened to Drake, is out of the label.
Many will be sure to wonder how the rap starlet was let go due to his boundless potential, but the truth is, it was no longer in the hands of Chocolate City. Milli, who is well-known for his performance braggadocio and abandon, had left the label since the turn of the year.
Last year, M.I Abaga had his plate full when the new Chocolate City was created via a merger with Loopy Music. That move saddled the label with 14 acts, with Milli being one of the crossover musicians who signed up with the new Choc City. But this year, he hungered for more focus and individuality, and found investors who were ready to fund his personal project. He created Upnexxt Universe, and demanded for a release from his contract. The two tweets, with which Chocolate City confirmed his departure, comes after months of wrangling, negotiations and deal-cutting. But it did come.
M.I Abaga always had his work cut out since the merger of his personal project, Loopy Music, with Chocolate City. Being the CEO of an organization that caters for the needs of 14 acts never will be an easy task, and although many times, the label has appeared stagnated, he has done a decent job of slowly steering them down a path of positivity. Last year, he was maligned for being unimpressive. This year, no one can in all honesty call him out on that.
Chocolate City has been active this year. The label which underwent modification last year with the promotion of M.I Abaga to CEO and the consequent merging of Chocolate City with Loopy Music has planned to release a minimum seven projects.
The new projects will consist of a minimum of 5 Mixtapes and EPs, 1 solo album, and 1 compilation album.
Of these 7 projects M.I Abaga, the label CEO has two mixtapes including the raved ‘Illegal Music 3’, and ‘Yung Denzel’.
Rapper Loose Kaynon already has his Mixtape, “The Gemini Project” out, and his will be followed by Pryse’s“The Pryse Tag”. Singer Ruby Gyang’s “This Is Love” EP is out.
In the singles department, Dice Ailes’ ‘Machinery’ is a dance floor banger, Koker’s ‘Kolewerk’ is pushing all the right buttons, and Pryse has a new series of freestyle covers being released on a weekly basis. Jesse Jagz already has two videos out.
The only planned solo album of the year will be released by Jesse Jagz. It is titled “”. The other album will be a compilation project, which will be titled .
Last year, Chocolate City only managed one project, “The Indestructible Choc Boi Nation”, which was rated by Pulse Music as one of the hottest albums released in 2015.
A curious absence in this list is label Vice President and rapper, Ice Prince, who is widely expected to also release an album. His last LP “Fire Of Zamani” was released in 2014, and there are hushed rumors of him splitting with the label. Victoria Kimani has also been tipped by many to have an album in the works.
