The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face South Africa in Uyo on Saturday, June 10 for the first game of the 2019 AFCON.
Ahead of the clash, Super Eagles boss, Gernot Rohr is not sure if Mikel who is recovering from surgery for an inguinal hernia will be part of the team.
“I am not too sure if he’ll be part of the squad that will face South Africa next month however, it’s still a 50-50 chance because we can’t just conclude now,” Rohr told Soccer Net.
“Mikel Obi’s case isn’t different from what other big football stars are facing today. Like they say, injury is always part of football and I have no reason why I should be lamenting over his injury.”
After the AFCON qualifier against South Africa, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will turn their focus to the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon in August and September and Rohr is delighted that Mikel will be fit.
“The good thing is that Mikel will be fit for the do or die clash against Cameroon on August 28 and I believe his presence will definitely lift up the moral of the the players in camp,” Super Eagles boss added.
