The president of one of the host nations for the tournament stated that this was a direct invitation from Trump. Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, the other of the three hosts, will also be in attendance, Sheinbaum clarified. On June 11, the president declined to attend the World Cup opening ceremony in her own country. She gifted her ticket for the Estadio Azteca to an indigenous woman who is a passionate football fan.

Relations between Mexico and the United States are currently strained due to trade and security issues. Sheinbaum has only met Trump in person once before, in December 2025 at the World Cup draw held in Washington. Her travel schedule in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo was altered to allow her to attend the final between Spain and Argentina in East Rutherford, near New York, Mexican media reported.

Spanish King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Crown Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía will be there tomorrow to cheer on their team. However, Argentina's President Javier Milei will not be watching the final from the stadium due to superstition. Superstitious rituals, known in Argentina as "cabalas," are part of football culture for many fans. They often watch matches in the same place or wearing the same clothes.
