Maximo Quiles secured his third consecutive victory and ninth overall this season in the Moto3 class of the FIM Road Racing World Championship, triumphing at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Starting fourth, Quiles maintained his position early in the 20-lap race, trailing David Almansa, Brian Uriarte, and Alvaro Carpe. On the third lap, Quiles moved into second place, first overtaking Uriarte at turn three, then passing his teammate Carpe on the approach to the penultimate corner.
The battle for victory at the Red Bull Ring quickly became another showdown between Almansa and Quiles, who had also contested the wins in the previous two races in Aragon and San Marino. However, today's contest was decided early due to an error by Almansa. While attempting to pull away from Quiles on lap eight, Almansa crashed at the chicane of turn two after losing front-tire grip.
Almansa's mistake allowed Quiles to take the lead, and the season's dominant rider didn't need a second invitation. With a controlled ride to the finish, Quiles secured the win. He crossed the checkered flag with a 2.3-second advantage over Uriarte, while Carpe completed the podium, 7.3 seconds behind the winner.
In the final laps, the most intense battle was for fourth place, involving eight riders. Ultimately, Eddie O'Shea finished fourth, ahead of Guido Pini, Casey O'Gorman, Adrian Cruces, Marco Morelli, Hakim Danish, Ryusei Yamanaka, and Joel Kelso, all part of that group. The last four points-scoring positions were taken by Valentin Perrone, Veda Pratama, Matteo Bertelli, and Joel Esteban, who received a four-long-lap penalty for track limits violations.
In the overall standings, Quiles leads with 306 points, holding a commanding 131-point advantage over Carpe, who today overtook Almansa. Almansa now trails the leader by 132 points. Quiles' significant lead means he could secure the title as early as the Japanese Grand Prix, provided he leaves Motegi with at least a 150-point lead.
The race in the Land of the Rising Sun, which kicks off the traditional Asian tour of the FIM Road Racing World Championship, is scheduled for October 4th.
