Thousands of Argentinians flocked to downtown Buenos Aires to celebrate their national football team's 2-1 victory over England in the North American World Cup semi-finals.
Crowds gathered in front of the Obelisco, the iconic landmark of the Argentine capital, which was illuminated in the national colors to mark the team's qualification for the 2026 World Cup final. People filled the Avenida 9 de Julio, with some revelers climbing onto bus stops and streetlights.
As in other parts of the city, people sang, danced, and waved flags, including those depicting the Falkland Islands, a territory that sparked a military conflict between Argentina and Great Britain in 1982. Due to this territorial dispute, the match, held in Atlanta (USA), carried particular symbolic significance in the South American nation.
