Marseille's new coach, Bruno Genesio, held a press conference two days before the team's Ligue 1 opener against Strasbourg. During the conference, he announced that American international Timothy Weah would be the team's first captain for the new season. The armband was taken from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who the club had put up for sale, but who himself refused a transfer.

"It seems difficult to prevent Paris Saint-Germain from becoming champions for another year. They are a team built with the best elements, with one of the best coaches in the world, and with resources incomparable to all others. There's a very small chance they won't be champions again, although you never know. As for the rest, there can always be surprises," the coach stated.

Genesio also spoke about the team's goalkeeper.

"Jeff (De Lange) has been here for several seasons; he knows the club inside out. He has proven he can take responsibility. I like our goalkeeper to be involved in play, but today when people talk about goalkeepers, they only mention their footwork. Their primary task, however, is still to save goals. Jeff does both well, so I'm calm," added Genesio, who was at the helm of Lens last season.
