Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that the 34-year-old goalkeeper is set to undergo a medical examination and sign his contract on Saturday. The multiple La Liga winner and former captain of the Catalan giants lost his starting spot at Barcelona and joined Girona on loan in January.
He had aimed to regain match fitness and secure a place at the World Cup with the ultimately relegated team, following back problems. However, his stint at Girona was cut short after just two games due to a hamstring injury and subsequent surgery. His contract with Barcelona runs until 2028.
The German international will reunite with Spanish coach Michel at Ajax. After an unsuccessful season at Girona, Michel has taken the helm of the most successful Dutch club, marking his first coaching experience outside his home country.
