Manchester United kicked off their pre-season with a defeat, falling 1-0 to League Two side Wrexham in a friendly held in Helsinki. For the opening whistle, Michael Carrick fielded a lineup featuring key players currently available to him, including new signing Andrey Santos, recently acquired from Chelsea. Harry Maguire led the team out wearing the captain's armband.

Santos's first significant action was a crucial clearance in the penalty area, defusing a dangerous situation that could have led to a goal, though there were lingering doubts about a foul on goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The 40-year-old shot-stopper was called into action again shortly after, saving a shot from Sam Smith. Wrexham played aggressively, pressing high and attacking at every opportunity. At the other end, a shot from Dorgu from the edge of the box was blocked. Carrick's side enjoyed more possession but failed to create any real threats on the opponent's goal.

In the 36th minute, Luke Shaw won a corner, and from Mount's delivery, an own goal almost materialized as Smith headed the ball against his own post. Three minutes later, Smith found the net at the other end. The striker was left unmarked in the penalty area and was picked out by an O'Brien pass.

Carrick made numerous changes at halftime, bringing on the academy prospects who were on the bench. Manchester United struggled to trouble the opposition goalkeeper in the first half, a trend that continued into the early stages of the second. While the Red Devils made some attempts to equalize, they nearly conceded a second goal in the 66th minute when Kaylor-Dunn broke through the defense, only for goalkeeper Vitek to make a crucial save with his foot. Towards the end, United upped the tempo and created two or three dangerous opportunities, but their finishing lacked the necessary precision.
