Manchester United will have to pay compensation to Newcastle if they want to appoint Eddie Howe as Michael Carrick's successor. In recent days, the Englishman has emerged as the frontrunner for the Old Trafford hot seat, with Red Devils technical director Jason Wilcox favouring him for his qualities and proven Premier League experience.
Howe left Newcastle in July, but the St James' Park hierarchy secured their interests with a mandatory compensation clause, given he still had several years left on his contract. Agreeing to that condition was required for him to be released in the summer. According to The Daily Telegraph, the compensation fee was initially set at £6 million, but that figure is now expected to have halved.
In addition, Manchester United will certainly have to pay a severance package to Carrick, who is under contract until the summer of 2028. Finalising these financial details is likely what is still holding up the official announcement of the managerial change.
