Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has launched a scathing attack on Lisandro Martinez, calling for the Argentine defender to be sold. His furious reaction followed the centre-back's red card in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, with Butt also criticising the player's recent behaviour and backing calls for him to be dropped and moved on.
"That lad is a bluffer, categorically. Just a bluffer. They call him 'The Butcher', but his performances lately have been woeful. And then he has the audacity to do an interview criticising the board over transfer policy when he isn't playing well himself. If the club decide to bring in new signings, he needs to be careful because he'll be one of the first out the door," Butt said.
The fiercest criticism was aimed at Martinez's conduct in the loss to Chelsea, where he received two yellow cards in just over a minute after elbowing Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area. "He let himself down with that. The reason is he isn't strong enough to cope defensively in a normal way, so he looks for shortcuts, cheats, and hits the opponent. That leaves the other ten players to fend for themselves," the former midfielder remarked.
Butt also referenced Martinez's involvement in the Argentine flag demonstration during the World Cup, where national team players held up a banner claiming the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina. According to him, the defender cannot expect leniency or support from English fans while failing to perform for his club.
