A left-back is set to be Sporting's ninth signing, completing Rui Borges' squad. Following this, new arrivals will only occur if there's an unplanned departure, meaning if the Lions transfer someone other than Pedro Gonçalves and Daniel Bragança, two players long anticipated to leave this summer.
Sporting successfully retained Maxi Araújo, who extended his contract until 2030 this August. This meant they didn't need to find a replacement for the highly sought-after 26-year-old Uruguayan international. However, with Ricardo Mangas heading to Monza, the club began searching for another left-back. This signing is the final one planned by the Lions for this transfer window.
Prior to this, eight new players joined, marking a squad overhaul, particularly in midfield, with a total investment of €120 million. These include center-back Ibrahima Ba (€21.25M/Famalicão); midfielders Issa Doumbia (€20M/Venezia), Pedro Lima (€4M/Aves SAD), Silas Andersen (€7.25M/Hacken), and Sergi Altimira (€18M/Betis); and forwards Rodrigo Zalazar (€30M/SC Braga), Irankunda (€15M/Watford), and Jesse Derry (loan from Chelsea).
Before the window closes, a left-back with room for development is expected. This player should be capable of immediately covering for Maxi Araújo's absences, while also growing into a role that can reliably replace the Uruguayan international when he eventually leaves the club, which is projected for next summer.
While Pote and Bragança are on the market, only an unexpected departure, like that of Geny Catamo, or an unplanned one, such as goalkeeper João Virgínia's, would prompt the Sporting administration to make further signings beyond the left-back.
Seventeen-year-old Moroccan Moncef Zekri is a player of interest. A young prodigy currently playing for Mechelen in Belgium, Sporting reportedly has €3-4 million reserved to make an offer. However, before pursuing Zekri, the Lions are attempting to secure a player, albeit young, with more experience.
The Moroccan talent is already attracting competition from the Netherlands. According to Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad, PSV Eindhoven is also keen on signing the young footballer. In the recent past, both Ajax and Leverkusen observed Zekri, though these approaches did not progress to formal negotiations.
