LeBron Trades Millions for 76ers' Stars in Pursuit of Fifth Title

Returning to the Eastern Conference, where he played 15 of his 23 seasons, the 41-year-old 22-time All-Star has opted to join one of the league's strongest rosters in a bid to hoist another championship trophy. However, he'll need to adapt to not always having the ball in his hands, leading the offense, or finishing plays, as there's ample talent for those tasks. Can his gravitational pull transform these stars into a dominant galaxy?

On July 24, 1833, in Portugal, liberal troops, led by the Duke of Terceira, entered Lisbon after defeating the Miguelist forces commanded by Teles Jordão in the Battle of Cova da Piedade. This marked a decisive moment, signaling the beginning of the end of absolutism in the country and the rise of liberalism.

Fast forward to 2026 in the United States, where LeBron James, through ESPN journalist Shams Charania, announced his decision to play his 24th season with the 76ers. This move has sent shockwaves through the NBA, significantly altering the balance of power in both the Eastern Conference and across the entire league.

With the Warriors, Heat, Cavaliers, and Timberwolves also vying for the 41-year-old forward/center's services, betting houses on Friday morning had given the four-time champion only an 8.9 percent chance of landing in Philadelphia.

This figure was significantly lower than the 45 percent attributed to the Heat, especially after a club error earlier in the week led to a social media post, quickly deleted, announcing that King James would be introduced in Miami the following Monday. It's now confirmed: it was indeed a mistake.

Two things are certain for now: when the 81st NBA season tips off in late October, the 76ers will have their 20,478-seat Xfinity Mobile Arena sold out for the entire season. The same will hold true for all 41 road games.

The other certainty is that Commissioner Adam Silver, along with the league's broadcast partners, can now breathe a sigh of relief and finalize the schedule. This is particularly crucial for selecting opening night and Christmas Day matchups, as well as all other special dates and weeks, such as rivalry week.

It's worth noting that James holds the record for most Christmas Day appearances, with 20! The late Kobe Bryant is the closest, with 16.

While the Sixers previously had 20/1 odds to win the 2026/27 title, those odds have now shortened to 10/1. Only the Thunder (+275) and Spurs (+275) are favored more, with the reigning champion Knicks (+850) in third place.

The agreement is for two seasons, valued at eight million dollars (7.108 million euros) — the veteran minimum. The second season includes a player option for James. This is a significant drop from the 52.627 million dollars (46.169 million euros) he earned last season.

In fact, when LeBron entered the NBA in 2003/04 as the first overall pick for the Cavaliers — a team located just 62 km from his hometown of Akron — he signed a four-year contract worth 18.788 million (16.482 million euros), earning 4.019 million (3.526 million euros) in his rookie season. This is slightly less than what he will receive with the 76ers in 2026/27.

As is evident, LeBron James' return to the East wasn't about the money, but rather the opportunity to contend for his fifth career title, following championships with the Heat (2011/12, 2012/13), the Cavs (2015/16), and later the Lakers (2019/20). A modest tally for someone who has played in 10 Finals.

Despite being in the NBA since 1949/50 (the league's fourth season) and boasting legendary stars like Dolph Schayes, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson, the 76ers have only three titles (1954/55, 1966/67, 1982/83). This is one less title than LeBron himself possesses, with the forward/center having won championships with every team he's played for.

In Philadelphia, he will be coached by Nick Nurse (59), who led the Raptors to a title in 2018/19. On his birthday, Nurse saw a luxury reinforcement confirmed for an already talent-laden team. This offseason also brought Jaylen Brown (a five-time All-Star and former teammate of Portugal's Neemias Queta with the Celtics, in a deal that sent Paul George to Boston), alongside center Joel Embiid (seven-time All-Star) and guards Tyrese Maxey (2) and V. J. Edgecombe (a former rookie and All-Rookie First Team selection).

Last season, the 76ers were swept (4-0) by the champion Knicks in the Conference Semifinals, after eliminating the Celtics in the first round (4-3). Can they now go further and transform this constellation of superstars into a true super team?

Bob Myers — the architect behind the Warriors' super team that won four titles in six Finals appearances — now heads the sports department for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the company that owns the Sixers and is owned by billionaire Josh Harris.

Beyond the blockbuster acquisition of Brown from the Celtics, Myers remains focused on strengthening the bench, having secured Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons, drafted Labaron Philon Jr., and retained Dominick Barlow and recent signing Ariel Hukporti.

It's expected that these role players will allow James to manage his workload during the regular season, and even more so for Embiid, whose career has been plagued by successive injuries in recent seasons. To such an extent that, over the last three seasons, the center has averaged only 32 games in the regular season (out of 82) and never played more than 39 in a single campaign.

The physical condition of these two stars will be Nurse's primary concern, aiming to ensure both arrive at the playoffs — the most demanding period with the least rest — at their peak capabilities.

This is especially crucial because when experiencing physical wear and tear or accumulated fatigue, LeBron can no longer be the defender he once was. Therefore, it will also be necessary for him to stick closely to the small forward and power forward positions he is expected to occupy, leaving playmaking duties to the explosive Maxey or the sharpshooting Edgecombe.

Will he be willing and able to embrace this role and adhere to Nurse's on-court plans, relinquishing total control of the offense? Especially since Brown is also accustomed to making decisions and playing one-on-one. These are some of the major questions that arise, and if they can be answered effectively, this constellation of stars could transform into a championship team.

Witnessing one of the greatest players of all time reduced to a third or fourth offensive option at certain moments will be a delicate balancing act on the court and a complex locker room chemistry experiment — demanding adaptation and the acceptance that teammates are also capable of making decisions.

In 2025/26, despite missing preseason and the start of the regular season due to sciatica, the NBA's all-time leading scorer and holder of multiple records (including most seasons played) appeared in 60 of 82 regular season games. He averaged 20.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in 33.2 minutes, with shooting percentages of 51.1% from two-point range, 31.7% from three, and 73.7% from the free-throw line. These are truly remarkable numbers for someone his age and with his extensive high-level experience.
