Top-tier European club football is back! After a scorching summer dominated by the 2026 World Cup, which concluded less than a month ago, and with UEFA's international competitions already underway, it's now time for the opening matches of the continent's most prestigious leagues.

Among Europe's top five championships, Spain's La Liga kicks off the action today, August 15th (Saturday), with two evening fixtures. The giants will enjoy a few more days of rest, as today's schedule begins at 8:30 PM Bulgarian time with a clash between Alavés and Getafe. Last season, the hosts from Vitoria-Gasteiz narrowly avoided relegation after a dramatic fight, finishing just one point above the drop zone, despite being four places clear of it. Getafe, on the other hand, secured a spot in European club competitions and will face Serbian side Partizan in a playoff next week for a place in the group stages.

Another team that survived the frantic relegation battle by the skin of their teeth, Sevilla, also begins their campaign tonight. At 10:30 PM, the five-time Europa League winners host Rayo Vallecano, who enjoyed a very strong season last year, reaching the final of the Conference League. However, their campaign ended in heartbreak as the Madrid-based team lost the European final to Crystal Palace, and despite not losing any of their final seven La Liga matches, they failed to qualify for UEFA competitions again.

All of that, however, is now history, and the 2026/2027 season is knocking at the door. Just hours remain until the first battles commence, marking the start of a season where Real Madrid and Barcelona will undoubtedly be the main contenders once more, but we'll be watching to see if any dark horses emerge.

Of course, Sportal.bg will continue to bring you all the most interesting news before, during, and after the matches across all 38 rounds of one of Europe's strongest club leagues.
