La Liga president Javier Tebas has addressed the diplomatic tension with China sparked by a lighthearted remark from Kylian Mbappe. The French forward jokingly commented on a viral internet meme comparing his appearance to Mao Zedong. However, the superstar's words provoked severe backlash, leading Chinese television broadcasters to suspend coverage of Spanish top-flight fixtures.
"La Liga expresses its deep regret over Kylian Mbappe's comments, which have caused distress and offense in China. We fully understand the harm caused, and on behalf of La Liga, I offer our most sincere apologies to the Chinese people," Tebas stated in an official release.
The league chief underscored the solid relationship built with the Asian country over the years: "For many years, we have built a relationship grounded in mutual respect, trust, and cooperation with China, its government authorities, sports organizations, media partners, and millions of Spanish football fans. We cannot allow an individual act to cast a shadow over this partnership and harm more than 20 professional clubs and the massive fan base across the country."
The football executive concluded by assuring that proactive measures are being taken to defuse the situation: "We are taking every possible step and maintaining direct dialogue with our partners in China to resolve this issue. Our commitment to China, its people, and its institutions remains steadfast. A relationship built with such dedication over so many years must not be derailed by a single incident."
