Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has confirmed he is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club, extending his stay at Anfield beyond the current season. The French international's renewal follows extensive negotiations with the club's management.

“Honestly, there’s been a lot said, but we’ve been in discussions with the club for a long time, and we’re now close to an agreement. I know everyone has been hoping for this for a while, but we’re on the right track. It’s very likely I’ll be here next season. That’s what I’ve always wanted. I’m waiting for the contract to be finalized, but once everything is settled, you’ll have to ask Richard Hughes (the sporting director) what I told him in September and November, and he’ll say something that will silence everyone. Yes, it’s taken a long time, but that’s how negotiations go. It was the same with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah last season. I think they re-signed in April, so perhaps that’s the club’s process,” Konaté commented, as reported by English media.

He also assured that he is ready to step up as a leader for the team, especially with the anticipated departures of Salah and Andrew Robertson, and Van Dijk’s advancing age. “I believe I am already a leader in this team: for the younger players, for those of my generation, and for everyone generally. We know this is part of football life. You know, one day the legends will leave, and then it will be our turn to take the lead. I started doing that years ago, and even more so in the last few months, and it’s a big responsibility. But we play football to have such opportunities and to ensure everything is well with this incredible club. However, I also need everyone’s help. I can’t do everything alone. That’s why I said that when everything is settled, I’d like you to talk to Richard and ask him what I told him before everyone started talking. You’ll see when he answers you,” added the 27-year-old center-back.
