Andrea Kimi Antonelli claimed his ninth victory of the Formula 1 season with a dominant drive at the United States Grand Prix. However, the Italian prodigy was unable to mathematically seal the 2026 World Championship in Austin and will have to wait at least another week to wrap up the crown.
Starting from pole on medium tyres, Antonelli retained the lead into the opening corner and executed a flawless one-stop strategy. In contrast, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen both committed to two-stop strategies, but the extra pit visits proved too costly to overcome.
Antonelli crossed the finish line 13.0 seconds clear of Leclerc, with Verstappen completing the podium in third, 17.4 seconds adrift of the winner. Lewis Hamilton came home in fourth place—one of the key results that delayed Antonelli's title celebrations.
Reigning world champion Lando Norris rounded out the top five ahead of Isack Hadjar, Oscar Piastri, George Russell, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly, who secured the final point. Further back, Nico Hülkenberg, Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, Carlos Sainz, and Sergio Pérez all saw the chequered flag. Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto, and Oliver Bearman were the three retirements of the afternoon.
In the Drivers' Championship, Antonelli leads the way on 365 points, holding a commanding 123-point cushion over teammate Russell. Hamilton sits third, 124 points behind the leader. Antonelli needed an advantage of at least 125 points leaving Austin to become champion today.
In the Constructors' standings, Mercedes surpassed the 600-point barrier, leading Ferrari by 133 points with a tally of 607. In the battle for third, Red Bull moved ahead of McLaren; both outfits are tied on 355 points, but Verstappen's greater tally of second-place finishes gives Red Bull the tiebreaker.
The 2026 Formula 1 season continues next weekend with the Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Key moments from the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix:
The soft tyre was the preferred starting compound for the majority of the field, chosen by Verstappen (P2), Hadjar (3), Leclerc (4), Hamilton (5), Lawson (9), Gasly (10), Hülkenberg (11), Alonso (12), Bearman (13), Lindblad (14), Ocon (15), Sainz (16), Albon (17), Pérez (18), and Bortoleto (21). Antonelli (1), Russell (6), Piastri (7), Norris (8), and pitlane-starter Stroll lined up on mediums, while Bottas (19) and Colapinto (20) went with hards.
Start – Antonelli got away cleanly from pole to fend off Verstappen, while Leclerc and Hamilton instantly overtook Hadjar into Turn 1. Snaking through the fast sweeping esses of Sector 1, Leclerc executed a bold move past Verstappen to claim second. Hamilton also looked to squeeze past the four-time champion, but Verstappen held him off.
Lap 1/56 – Verstappen snatched second place back from Leclerc with a dive into the tight Turn 15, while Antonelli pulled out an impressive 2.4-second lead by the end of the opening tour.
Lap 2/56 – Virtual Safety Car! A brief VSC was deployed to clear debris scattered on the track following a midfield scuffle on lap one, but racing resumed almost immediately.
Lap 3/56 – At the end of the first three laps, Antonelli led from Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Hadjar, Russell, Piastri, Norris, Lawson, and Bearman inside the top ten.
Lap 5/56 – The stewards noted an incident involving Russell for potentially leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage at Turn 13 on the opening lap.
Lap 6/56 – A formal investigation was opened into Russell, who was running sixth just ahead of Piastri and Norris. The alleged infraction occurred during a wheel-to-wheel scrap with Piastri.
Lap 8/56 – Following team orders over the radio, Piastri let teammate Norris through at the end of the main straight. Further back, Gasly broke into the top ten with a late-braking manoeuvre on Bearman into Turn 1.
Lap 9/56 – The stewards concluded their investigation, handing Russell a five-second time penalty after ruling he gained a lasting advantage by exceeding track limits between Turns 12 and 13 on lap one. At this stage, the penalty would drop him behind both McLarens.
Lap 10/56 – Out front, Antonelli led Verstappen by 2.7 seconds, with the Dutchman holding a 1.9-second cushion over Leclerc. Hamilton trailed his teammate by 3.1 seconds in fourth, sitting 2.6 seconds clear of Hadjar.
Lap 12/56 – Hamilton reported poor handling on corner entry, particularly in the low-speed sections. His Ferrari engineer advised him to make engine braking adjustments from the cockpit.
Lap 13/56 – Verstappen pitted for fresh rubber and opted for another set of soft tyres, rejoining in eighth place, 3.7 seconds behind Piastri.
Lap 14/56 – Hamilton made his first stop of the afternoon, switching from softs to mediums for his second stint. The Briton emerged in ninth position, right on Lawson's gearbox.
Lap 15/56 – Verstappen made quick work of Piastri at Turn 15. At the end of the lap, both Leclerc and Piastri dove into the pit lane; Leclerc took on mediums, while Piastri switched to hards. Leclerc rejoined 4.9 seconds behind Verstappen and 3.1 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who had already dispatched Lawson on fresh tyres.
Lap 16/56 – Norris peeled into the pit lane to mirror his teammate's strategy, swapping his starting mediums for hard tyres.
Lap 18/56 – Making full use of his fresher tyres, Verstappen closed in on Russell and swept past at the end of the back straight to take third, sitting 5.4 seconds behind teammate Hadjar.
Lap 20/56 – Leclerc also tracked down Russell, overtaking the Mercedes into Turn 15 to take fourth, precisely four seconds adrift of Verstappen.
Lap 22/56 – Race leader Antonelli was praised by his pit wall for excellent tyre management. The Italian was running within a second of Verstappen's lap times despite tyres that were 12 laps older. Russell pitted at the end of the lap to serve his five-second time penalty, rejoining tenth, three seconds behind Gasly.
Lap 23/56 – Verstappen caught teammate Hadjar and was duly waved through into second place, 12.7 seconds behind Antonelli. Verstappen showed minor frustration on team radio as Hadjar took slightly longer than expected to yield, forcing him to spend extra corners in dirty air.
Lap 24/56 – Antonelli pitted from the lead to fit hard tyres, rejoining fourth, 4.9 seconds behind Leclerc. It was clear Antonelli was committed to a one-stop strategy, whereas both Verstappen and Leclerc were locked into two-stoppers.
Lap 25/56 – Hadjar threw every defensive move in the book at Leclerc to keep the Ferrari behind, successfully holding him off until diving into the pits at the end of the lap. Hadjar's staunch defence cost Leclerc nearly a second to Verstappen on that lap alone. Hadjar rejoined on hard tyres in sixth, right in front of Piastri.
Lap 30/56 – Verstappen complained over the radio that his car was "undriveable." The Dutchman was the slowest of the frontrunners, with Leclerc taking 0.8 seconds a lap out of him and Antonelli closing even faster.
Lap 31/56 – Verstappen came in for his second stop of the race, switching to medium tyres after two stints on softs. A stubborn front-right tyre slowed the stop, and he emerged fifth, 7.1 seconds behind Norris.
Lap 32/56 – Antonelli reclaimed the lead of the Grand Prix, cruising past Leclerc at the end of the back straight.
Lap 35/56 – Antonelli suffered a scare when he locked his front-left tyre and ran wide into the Turn 12 run-off area behind Sainz, who was late obeying blue flags as the leader approached.
Lap 37/56 – Despite running on hard tyres seven laps fresher than his rival's, Russell remained stuck behind Piastri in an intense, protracted battle for seventh place.
Lap 38/56 – Hamilton completed his second pit stop, taking hard tyres for the final stint after running softs and mediums earlier. The Briton emerged sixth, 2.1 seconds behind Hadjar, whose hard tyres were already 13 laps old.
Lap 39/56 – A lap after his teammate, Leclerc made his second stop and fitted hards for the run to the flag, rejoining in fourth place, 8.7 seconds behind Verstappen.
Lap 41/56 – With 15 laps to go, Antonelli held a comfortable 14.5-second lead over Norris, who led Verstappen by 1.2 seconds. Leclerc sat 7.3 seconds behind Verstappen after setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 41, taking 1.3 seconds out of the Dutchman in a single lap.
Lap 42/56 – Hamilton pulled off a clean overtake on Hadjar into Turn 1, elevating the seven-time champion to fifth place, 7.5 seconds adrift of Leclerc.
Lap 44/56 – Leclerc continued his blistering charge, carving Verstappen's advantage down to just 2.4 seconds.
Lap 47/56 – Verstappen finally found a way past Norris for second with a late dive into Turn 1. Leclerc tried to follow him through, but Norris shut the door into Turn 2. Later in the lap, however, Leclerc capitalized on a slight slip from Norris at Turn 13 to snatch third.
Lap 49/56 – The flying Leclerc left Verstappen with no answer, sweeping past on the back straight to take second place, 16.8 seconds behind race leader Antonelli.
Lap 51/56 – Hamilton made his move on Norris into Turn 1, demoting the McLaren driver and taking fourth place, 5.4 seconds behind Verstappen.
Virtual Safety Car! Bottas ground to a halt with a mechanical failure on the inside of Turn 10, prompting a brief VSC period so marshals could recover the stricken car.
Lap 53/56 – Restart! Bottas's car was safely cleared without requiring a full Safety Car, and green-flag racing resumed midway through lap 53.
Finish – Andrea Kimi Antonelli took the chequered flag to win the United States Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen completing the podium at COTA.
