K1 De Ultimate, one of Nigeria’s living legends of original Nigerian music, with over 60 long playing albums and international releases, has assumed his mentor's role as "King of Fuji," a style of dance music combining Juju, Apala, and Yoruban Blues.

The special event held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, was crafted to be a night where traditional Nigerian music will shine through, with sprinklings of pop, dance and urban music.

Hosts for the night include Olisa Adibua, Teju Babyface, and Spanky, with DJ Consequence working the wheels of steel. Performances on the night was varied in class, with a perfect blend of the young acts, the pop stars, and the vintage stars.

There were sets played by Que Peller, Baseone, Soma, Olawale, and Mayorkun, who were followed by the silky voice of Shola Allison, the experience of Gloria Ibru, the jazz of John Scott and the adoration of Lanre Teriba Atorise. Vector, 9ice, and Adekunle Gold all came on stage to open for a greater force.

A prolific recording artist, K1 De Ultimate continues to update the Fuji style. In addition to incorporating such Western instruments as keyboards, saxophone, and electric guitar, KWAM1 has expanded his musical vocabulary to include Rock, Funk, and Hip-hop influences. Although he initially sang Koranic chants and rhymes, KWAM1 has increasingly focused on youth-oriented themes. A member of Chief Doctor Sikiru Ayinde Barrister's band, the Supreme Fuji Commanders, from 1978 until 1984, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal I fondly called KWAM1 (born: Wasiu Ayinde Adewale Omogbolahan Anifowsha), is a living legend.

The recipient of a Nigerian music award as Best Fuji Artist of 1995, KWAM1 was named Best African Artist at the following year's WOMAD Festival in Reading, England. In May 2001, he was granted the title "Olu Omo" (golden child) by the king of Lagos, King Adeyinka Oyekan II. Recording as a soloist since 1980, KWAM1 had his greatest success with his 1984 album, Talazo 84, which introduced a new, turbo-charged style of music that became known as the Talazo system.

This event, had all of this both in substance and attendance. Present in the crowd were the monied elite of Lagos, with His Royal Majesty Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi a prominent attendee. Also present was Lagos socialite and entertainment entrepreneur, Shina Peller.

KWAM1 performed a long string of hit songs from his albums, switching between his evergreen tracks. He has a new album in the works, and two songs off it were played at last night's event.
