Prior experienced some tightness in his right thigh in preparation for the start of the five-match series, which begins at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old's fitness will continue to be assessed, but Lancashire star Buttler is in line to replace him should he be unable to participate.

Buttler is uncapped at Test level, but has played 33 one-day internationals and 36 Twenty20 matches for his country.

The 23-year-old was left out of the side for the Test series with Sri Lanka, despite scoring the fastest ever ODI century by an England player in the preceding limited overs series.

That effort saw him score 121 in 102 balls in a losing cause at Lord's back in May.

However, in spite calls for him to enter the Test fray, captain Alastair Cook insisted at the time that Buttler was "not quite ready" for the top level of the game.
