Burns, 26, has played two Tests and his century against the Black Caps in a tour match on Saturday did his chances no harm.

He is likely to open with David Warner in what is a new-look Test team following the retirements of Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Ryan Harris, Brad Haddin and Chris Rogers.

Usman Khawaja, Adam Voges and Mitchell Marsh have also been included in Steve Smith's 12-man squad, with the first Test starting in Brisbane on November 5.

Usman is a very good player of fast-bowling and is a fine technician. We feel he will make a really solid contribution towards our batting this series," national selector Rod Marsh said.

"Joe thoroughly deserves his chance and was unlucky to miss out on the West Indies and Ashes tours off the back of two decent performances in his last Test match for Australia in Sydney.

"He also put in terrific performances during the recent Australia A Series in India."

Despite reports suggesting otherwise earlier on Friday, uncapped wicketkeeper Bancroft missed out.

Shaun Marsh was also overlooked.

Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc spearhead the pace attack, with Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle likely competing for a spot.
