Jaime Faria's Roland Garros journey concluded with a five-set defeat to Frances Tiafoe in the third round on Saturday. Faria, who had taken the first two sets against the American world No. 22, ultimately fell on Court Suzanne Lenglen in Paris.
Faria, who was aiming to become the first Portuguese player to reach the Roland Garros last 16 and only the third in a major after João Sousa and Nuno Borges, saw his impressive run end in his sixth match of the tournament, having successfully navigated three qualifying rounds.
As the last Portuguese tennis player remaining in the French Grand Slam following Nuno Borges's elimination, Faria started strong, winning the first two sets 6-4 and 7-6 (with a 7-2 tie-break). However, in a tightly contested third set, the national No. 2 player succumbed to the tournament's 19th seed, also in a tie-break (6-7, 4-7), pushing the match to a fourth set. In what proved to be the shortest and least competitive set, Frances Tiafoe dominated 6-1, forcing a decisive fifth set.
The 22-year-old Faria, currently ranked 115th in the ATP but guaranteed to break into the top 100 after Roland Garros, ultimately lost the deciding set after Tiafoe secured a crucial break in the sixth game (2-4). The 28-year-old American then closed out the match 6-2, after four hours of play.
