Shiite group says Army killed 500 of its members

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, known for its Shiite Muslim doctrines, has said that at least 500 of its members were killed by the Nigerian Army during a recent clash in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Soldiers engaged the Shiites in a battle after the group allegedly attempted to assassinate Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai on Saturday, December 12, 2015.

The group however told Channels TV that the killings were unjustified while calling on international rights group to probe the incident.

Shiite spokesperson, Ibrahim Musa also said that soldiers had destroyed the home of the group’s leader, Sheik Ibrahim Zakzaky.

The conflict between the Shiites and the army escalated after on Saturday.

The resulting gunfight is said to have of Zakzaky’s wife and son and also the group’s Second-in-Command, Sheik Muhammad Turi.

Zakzaky himself has reportedly been arrested by the army.
