Around 30 fighters killed in central Yemen clashes

"The Houthis and (army) forces launched a big attack on the area but the popular committees resisted them and killed 21 of the attackers. Nine of the defenders were killed," one tribesman told Reuters by phone from the area.

Around 30 fighters were killed in clashes between Houthi militiamen and tribesmen in the central Yemeni province of Mareb on Thursday, tribal sources said.

Ansar Allah ("Supporters of God"), known more popularly as the (Arabic: are a Zaidi group operating in Yemen. The group takes its name from Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, who launched an insurgency in 2004 and was reportedly killed by Yemeni army forces that September.

Led by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the group succeeded in a taking over the Yemeni government in 2014–15 and, as of April 2015, retains control of Yemen's capital, Sana'a, and the parliament. It has also occupied significant part of Yemen's territory and tried to conquer Aden, the second important city of the country.
