Traffic accident-related deaths have increased in the United States.

According to AP News, last year saw the highest number of accident-related deaths in 50 years.

Deborah A.P. Hersman, the council's president and CEO, said, "these numbers are serving notice: Americans take their safety on the roadways for granted."

This high rate was attributed to a stronger economy, lower unemployment rates, and lower gas prices.

All of the above make driving more affordable, meaning more people on the roads, which increases the chances of accidents occurring.

$412.1 billion is the estimated cost of 2015's accidents, deaths, injuries and property damages.
