Magufuli, nicknamed “The Bulldozer”, cancelled the usually extravagant ceremony saying that it would be “shameful” to spend huge sums of money on celebrations when his “people are dying of cholera”.

The President of Tanzania, John Magufuli has cancelled Independence Day celebrations in his country and joined citizens to clean the streets instead.

He ordered citizens of the country to clean their environment instead and decided to lead by example.

The president was pictured in Dar es Salaam dressed casually with a pile of rubbish in his hands.

Cholera has killed about 60 people in Tanzania in the last three months.

This will be the first time in 54 years Tanzania will not hold celebrations to mark independence from the UK.

Magufuli was elected into office in October 2015.
