Man remanded for assaulting local gin seller with iron rod over N30

A 35-year-old, Kabiru Raji, who allegedly hit a local gin seller with an iron rod on the head, was on Monday in Lagos remanded in prison pending when his bail conditions would be fulfilled.

An Ikeja Magistrates' Court which gave the ruling, said the unemployed man should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, had granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Raji, however, could not immediately meet the bail condition and was remanded in prison.

The accused, whose address is unknown, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of breach of peace and assault.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb.9 at Nigeria Railway, Agege.

"The accused hit the local gin seller, , with a small iron rod on the head following an argument over N30 shot of the gin.

"He bought a cup of N30 drink from the complainant (the gin seller) but refused to pay,’’ he said.

The offences contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The magistrate adjourned the case to March 3 for mention.
