Fast bowler Jerome Taylor reminds West Indies Australia's Steven Smith is not invincible
After scoring his fifth Test century in just six matches, you could be forgiven for thinking Steven Smith was some kind of cricketing superhero.
Smith batted almost the entire opening day of the second Test versus West Indies on Thursday, finishing with 135 not out.
But West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor has backed his team-mates to force a mistake from the Australian batsman, reminding everyone that Smith is still mortal.
"Steve Smith is a fantastic player, but at the end of the day he is still a human being and mistakes are there to be made," Taylor said after stumps on day one.
"I'm sure he's no different to from anyone else, so it's about just being confident and being positive."
Smith came to the crease after David Warner was caught off Taylor's bowling, and quickly lost partner Shaun Marsh - another Taylor scalp.
But the number three combined with captain Michael Clarke for a 118-run partnership.
Clarke made the most of a let off at the hands of Kemar Roach to score 47, while Adam Voges (37) and Shane Watson (20 not out) provided crucial support to Smith.
"We all know that having Michael Clarke on a no ball, it's a big blow for us," Taylor said.
"But at the end of the day it's still cricket and these things do happen. We have to move on past that."
Despite the missed opportunities and his team's inability to stop Smith, Taylor was still pleased with the way his side slowed Australia's momentum.
"Well, 4-250 we'll take that. If we had been five for that score that would have been much easier for us," the fast bowler said.
"But at the end of the day, the first session of the day went haywire and then the bowlers they really came back and pulled the charge together and we really pulled the Aussies back so much.
"So, I mean, we are confident about moving forward and hopefully tomorrow can be a better day for us."
