Darryl Hunt who had spent 19 years in prison for a murder he had not committed, has been found dead in a car in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Sunday, March 13, 2016.

The Charlotte Observerreports that Hunt had been charged with rape and murder of a newspaper copy editor in 1984 at age 19 but had later been exonerated in February 2004.

In 1984 at age 19, Hunt was charged with the rape and murder of a newspaper copy editor with a jail sentence of 20 years but was later exonerated in February 2004, after DNA evidence had revealed that he was innocent as well as leading the police to the real culprit, Willard Brown, who later confessed to the murder.

Upon his exoneration, Hunt had been granted a pardon by the Governor who awarded him a settlement of more than $1.6 million in 2007.

Following his release, the reports reveal that Hunt still suffered nightmares from his time in jail mostly due to the fact that he had been wrongly convicted.

Hunt reportedly went to an ATM every day, and not necessarily to get money but for weirder reasons.

He wanted to be able to prove his where abouts on daily basis in case he got wrongfully accused for a second time.

Hunt who had also recently been diagnosed of cancer, had not let that stop him from accomplishing his dream of helping wrongfully accused citizens like he had been, all over the country.

The deceased had gone on to found the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice, an advocacy group for the wrongfully convicted and with the help of the People of Faith Against Death Penalty to speak on abolishing the death penalty while improving the justice system.

Hunts death had been revealed after a police call came though, reporting the discovery of a dead person in a car near a university campus, who had later been identified to be the victim.

The victim had been found unresponsive upon the arrival of the police, and his cause of death is yet to be released.
