A worker of Ikeja Electric Plc (IKEDC) has survived a scary electric shock incident after he was reportedly hit while working on a power pole around Gbagada Bus Stop, Lagos State.

The incident, which happened on Thursday, left commuters and residents in panic as the technician became trapped on the elevated ladder while his colleagues rushed to bring him down safely.

A video circulating online showed two IKEDC field workers struggling to rescue their colleague, who appeared unconscious and stuck on the ladder after the shock. His head was facing downward while his lower body remained positioned on the pole, but he could still be seen moving his arms and body as efforts were made to free him.

An eyewitness who recorded the incident confirmed that the worker survived the initial shock and urged people around to remain calm.

“This is Gbagada Bus Stop. This incident just happened now. Light just shocked the guy; he is a NEPA guy. Now they’re trying to bring him down; he’s not dead,” the eyewitness said.

The video quickly gained attention online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the dangers faced by electricity workers who regularly climb poles and work around high-voltage equipment to restore power and maintain electricity networks.

Electricity workers in Nigeria often operate under challenging conditions, especially as they respond to faults and repairs across busy communities. Their work remains critical in keeping homes, businesses, hospitals and public facilities connected to power.

When contacted, Ikeja Electric confirmed that the technician survived the incident and was receiving treatment at a hospital.

The Head of Corporate Communications at Ikeja Electric, Kingsley Okotie, said the company was taking necessary steps following the incident.

“He is being treated. He is recuperating in hospital. All necessary safety protocols are being put in place to ensure it does not happen again,” Okotie said.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by frontline workers in Nigeria’s power sector, where technicians often work in difficult environments while trying to maintain electricity supply for millions of Nigerians.
