Timi Dakolo’s lovely story of how he met his wife would make some Nigerian ‘alpha males’ have seizures

• He kept pursuing her after her stolen phone made his first call fail.

• The singer eventually told her, “I like you very well.”

Some Nigerian men have made an entire philosophy out of never chasing a woman. Timi Dakolo, apparently, did not get the memo.

The Nigerian singer has revealed the hilarious story of how he met his wife, Busola Dakolo, and if some of the internet’s self-proclaimed “alpha males” are listening, they may actually have seizures.

Speaking on The Morayo Show, Dakolo recalled spotting Busola in church and immediately noticing that she was frowning.

“She was frowning. Not a joke; I just go meet her. Fine girl like you dey frown,” he said. He introduced himself, asked for her number and confidently promised to call her. There was, however, one small problem: the number did not go through.

At first, Timi thought Busola had given him a wrong number. But according to Busola, that wasn't what happened: she had given him her real number, only for her phone to be stolen that same day. 

Rather than taking the failed call as a sign to move on, Dakolo kept looking for her in church. “I dey search for her for church,” he recalled on the podcast.

When he eventually found her again, the singer asked her out. And his version of courtship was apparently not built around pretending he was uninterested, as the norm has become with nonchalant men being widespread.

He would pick her up from work, drop her off, take her to get suya when she wanted some and generally show up for her.

At some point, Busola apparently classified all of this as friendship until Dakolo made his intention known with his mouth.

“I’m not your friend, oh. I like you very well,” he told her. And that was that.

The funny thing is that the story sounds almost too straightforward for modern dating advice: he saw a woman he liked, approached her, pursued her, did thoughtful things for her and eventually told her exactly how he felt, all of which worked, thankfully.

Dakolo and Busola met in church around 2010 and married in 2012. They now have three children together. Dakolo has also credited their relationship as inspiration for his romantic music, including his 2014 song Iyawo Mi, dedicated to his wife.

Dakolo once revealed that he proposed by hiding a ring in a covered plate after telling Busola he was bringing her breakfast in bed. She expected noodles. Instead, she got a marriage proposal.

Dakolo’s story could perhaps teach every Nigerian man who has dismissed intentionality and pursuing a woman as “simping” a thing or two: love, sometimes, is as simple as knowing what you want and being bold enough to go after it.

And while telling a Nigerian woman to “smile” might earn you a well-deserved side-eye (or worse), respectfully walking up to her, introducing yourself and making your intentions clear could just be the first step towards finding the love of your life.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little courage.
