Hansi Flick ahead of El Clásico: "It’s the greatest game, I have complete trust in the referees"
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick addressed the media ahead of tomorrow's blockbuster El Clásico clash against Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou. The German tactician expressed complete confidence in his squad and highlighted the immense energy surrounding the fixture.
"El Clásico is a unique experience – it's the biggest game our sport has to offer. The entire world will be watching. There are three points on the line, but this match means so much more than that. It's fantastic to be involved in an occasion like this. We can't wait to get out there; we're fully prepared and believe in our strengths," Flick said.
The Blaugrana boss confirmed that French defender Jules Kounde will miss the derby as he continues training individually following a sprained left ankle. "Kounde is sidelined. We don't want to take any risks with his fitness. The timing isn't ideal, but we have to accept it. As for Dani Olmo, he was in superb form and at 100%. Unfortunately, his injury happened under unfortunate circumstances. He's disappointed to miss a few games, but we have Fermin Lopez ready in that role," Flick explained.
When questioned about a tactical plan to neutralize Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe, Flick stressed the importance of collective defending and tactical discipline: "The key for us is positional discipline – both in and out of possession. We have to manage the distances between the lines and stay compact. That's essential when operating with a high defensive line. Pau Cubarsi and Gerard are having fantastic seasons; they complement each other brilliantly and are developing together."
The German coach also praised the progress of young talent Xavi Espart, as well as the impact of Rodri in the engine room, noting that alongside Pedri, they provide exceptional quality in central midfield.
Flick sounded a warning over Madrid's aerial threat from dead-ball situations: "Real Madrid are one of the most dangerous sides from set pieces. They possess immense physical power. We've discussed it and worked on it in training. We have to defend those situations better, and I hope to see that on the pitch. I expect a confident opponent with world-class quality in the final third and an outstanding manager."
Addressing recent controversies surrounding match officials and chatter coming out of the capital, Flick remained composed and focused strictly on the football: "I prefer to concentrate on the game. I'm not here to create headlines; my priority is my team. I have complete trust in the referees. We are all part of the game and must protect one another."
Juan Martinez Munuera has been appointed as referee for the showdown, taking charge of his fifth career El Clásico, with Javier Iglesias Villanueva overseeing VAR duties.
Flick also reflected on the recent Champions League setback against PSG, stating that the mistakes have been thoroughly reviewed and must serve as learning moments for the squad. He also paid tribute to Jose Mourinho, recalling their encounter in Madrid during his time as Joachim Low's assistant with the German national team.
