Former two-division UFC champion Georges St-Pierre, who retired as one of the most accomplished fighters in history, will have his life story adapted into a new biographical film. Canadian filmmaker Thomas Soto has been tapped to direct the project.
The news was first reported by "Variety" on Tuesday (March 24).
“We’ve been considering telling my story for a while, and when we found this team, it became clear that we wanted this to be done in a new and creative way,” the MMA legend stated regarding the project.
Recognized as one of the greatest mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters of all time, St-Pierre conquered both the welterweight and middleweight divisions during his career before retiring in 2019. He won his first UFC title in 2006, avenging an earlier loss to Matt Hughes, but then lost the belt in his very next fight after a defeat to Matt Serra. St-Pierre returned in dominant fashion and remained undefeated for the rest of his career.
The Canadian defeated Serra to reclaim his title just over a year later, then defended it a record nine times. His victories during this period include wins over fighters such as Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Josh Koscheck, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, and Johny Hendricks.
The Montreal fighter then vacated the title and took a nearly four-year hiatus. He returned in 2017, defeating Michael Bisping to become the UFC Middleweight Champion. He relinquished that belt just over a month later, and the victory over Bisping remains the last fight of his legendary career. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2020 and still holds numerous records from his time in the Octagon.
“I want to tell the story of Georges behind the GSP persona in a way that feels intimate, honest, and deeply human,” Soto commented on the film. “For me, bringing this story to the world is both a privilege and a responsibility.”
Soto, a Quebec-based director, has worked on several film and television projects in his native Canada and will now undertake adapting St-Pierre's life for the big screen.
Casting for the project has not yet begun, nor has a distributor been found, but producers are already committed to the film's realization, with St-Pierre himself working closely with the team.
