Data shows people are using mobile more than desktop for the first time ever
Global Internet usage on tablets and mobile phones have officially exceeded desktop worldwide for the first time.
According to independent web analytics company StatCounter's research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3% of internet usage worldwide in the month of October compared to 48.7% recorded on desktop.
The report further revealed insights saying "increased traffic plus Google search rankings stress the importance of mobile-friendly websites."
“This should be a wake-up call especially for small businesses, sole traders and professionals to make sure that their websites are mobile friendly. Many older websites are not," said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter.
“Mobile compatibility is increasingly important not just because of growing traffic but because Google favours mobile friendly websites for its mobile search results.”
The report also shows that despite the rapid uptick in the growth of mobile devices, the desktop still remains the primary access point for the Internet in markets like the US and the UK.
Here in Nigeria, mobile is still king as StatCounter data shows that, over the last 12 months (October 2015 - September 2016), mobile has been responsible for 82.01% of Internet traffic while desktop and tablet were responsible for 14.87% and 3.13% of Internet usage respectively.
